JUST IN: Acting CJN's Tenure Extended By 3 Months
The tenure of the acting chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, has been extended by three months by the National Judicial Council.
Channels Television reports that NJC took the action because confirming Justice Onnoghen as the substantive CJN before Friday when his tenure as acting CJN would elapse, may be impossible for the senate, which is currently on recess.
President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Onnoghen on November 10 in acting capacity.
If Onnoghen is confirmed as the CJN, he becomes the first Southerner to occupy the position in 30 years. Justice Ayo Irikefe was the chief justice of Nigeria from the South who retired in 1987.
