Man Sentenced To Death 5 Years After Committing Murder

A man, Anuoluwapo Samuel, has been sentenced to death for murder of one John Omobere by a Lagos State High Court.

The sentence comes close to five years after Samuel carried out the act.

Samuel was said to have killed Omobere with a machete at Oke- Afa Secondary School, Badagry, on May 2, 2012, after the two men were involved in a fight.

Samuel was said to have cut Omobere with a machete on his right arm after the deceased stabbed him with a broken bottle.

Justice Raliat Adebiyi while delivering judgment on Monday said the evidence before the court showed that although Samuel did not set out to kill Omobere, he was aware that the machete wound he inflicted on the victim would cause grievous bodily harm.

Although the convict's lawyer, Miss Y. A. Ajayi, begged the judge to temper justice with mercy.

Justice Adebiyi held, "The convict is sentenced to death in accordance with Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. May the Lord have mercy on your soul."
