Angola Football Stadium Stampede Claims 17, Scores Injured

At least 17 people have been killed with score others injured in a stampede which occurred at a football pitch in Angola.

State News Agency Angop reports that the match is the between Santa Rita de Cassia and Libolo was part of Angola’s first division championship.

The crowd was said to have pushed against barriers when they could not gain access to the stadium before the start of the match. Many people were trapped in the ensuing stampede.

According to eyewitness account, the crowd trying to get into the stadium would have pushed the building over its 8,000-person capacity.

Joao Silva, a witness said ‘When we wanted to go in, we found a barrier.' He added that he survived the crush but had suffered a broken foot. ‘I was in the third layer [of people],’ Silva added.
